What’s the difference between mentor coaching and coaching supervision?

What’s the difference between mentor coaching and coaching supervision?

Mentor coaching and supervision play distinct roles in supporting professional coaches, each serving unique purposes. While they share similarities, it’s important to differentiate between the two.

Mentor coaching involves a coach observing your coaching sessions and providing feedback, akin to a teacher’s role. This constructive feedback helps you refine your coaching techniques, align with coaching competencies, and meet the requirements set forth by credentialing bodies. It’s primarily geared toward skill improvement.

In contrast, supervision is a process that fosters your growth as a coach and often takes the form of reflective conversations. These discussions focus less on acquiring new skills and more on self-awareness, exploring your coaching presence, and addressing your core values. During supervision, you delve into ethical dilemmas and best practices. Ideally, these sessions should invigorate you, offering fresh perspectives and insights to energise and inspire your coaching practice.

Why is coaching supervision important?

The International Coach Federation (ICF) acknowledges the significance of coaching supervision in the ongoing professional development, learning, and evolution of coaches. As a valuable component of their Continuing Professional Development (CPD) activities, coaching supervision is highly recommended for full-time professional coach practitioners to ensure they remain proficient and effective in their roles.

Coaches can allocate up to 10 hours of resource development credits from coaching supervision towards their ICF credential or its renewal, further emphasising its importance in their professional growth and competence.
