How Systems Coaching Helps Families Thrive During Summer Break

How Systems Coaching Helps Families Thrive During Summer Break

School’s Out, But the Coaching Can Begin

Summer break – a time for carefree days, family adventures, and… let’s be honest, a potential strain on family dynamics. With the structured routine of school replaced by extended periods at home, parents often face increased demands for attention, leading to stress and frustration.

But what if there was a way to navigate these changes more harmoniously? Systems coaching, is a powerful approach to understanding and improving family relationships. Here’s how it can transform your summer break, and how you can leverage the Organisation for Relational Systems Coaching (ORSC) methodology to create a more peaceful and connected family environment.

Seeing the Bigger Picture:

Systems coaching goes beyond individual behaviour. It helps you see the family as a system, where everyone’s actions and emotions impact each other. This shift in perspective allows you to understand how the disrupted routine of summer break might be affecting everyone differently. Maybe your child is struggling with the lack of structure, while you’re feeling overwhelmed with juggling work and increased childcare needs.

The Power of ORSC Tools:

ORSC provides practical tools and principles you can readily adapt for your family:

  • Circular questioning: Instead of a parent-child hierarchy, use circular questioning to encourage open communication. Ask questions like, “What’s it like for you when you don’t have school?” or “How can we make things easier for everyone during the break?”
  • Identifying patterns: Notice recurring patterns in family dynamics. Does everyone become more stressed around mealtimes? Do mornings turn chaotic because of lack of clear expectations? By recognising patterns, you can work together to create solutions.

Building a Collaborative Approach:

  • Shared goals: Work with your children to set shared goals for the summer. This could involve creating a schedule that balances fun activities with downtime, or establishing clear expectations for screen time and household chores.
  • Active listening: Practice active listening skills encouraged by ORSC. Put down your phone, make eye contact, and truly try to understand your child’s perspective when they express frustration or boredom.

Fostering Emotional Regulation:

  • Identifying triggers: Help your children identify what triggers their meltdowns or emotional outbursts. Is it feeling bored? Overstimulation? Once you understand the triggers, you can develop strategies to manage them together.
  • Co-regulation: Children learn to regulate their emotions by observing their parents. During stressful moments, use calming techniques like deep breathing and offer a safe space for them to express their feelings.

Remember: Systems coaching is a journey, not a destination. It requires ongoing practice and commitment. However, the benefits can be life-changing.

  • Stronger bonds: Through improved communication and collaboration, your family relationships will deepen during the summer months.
  • Reduced conflict: By understanding each other’s needs and expectations, you can avoid potential conflicts before they even arise.
  • A happier summer: By working together as a team, you can create a more enjoyable and fulfilling summer break experience for everyone.

So, as the school bell rings for the last time this term, embrace the opportunity to invest in your family relationship. By applying the principles of systems coaching, you can transform your summer break from a potential struggle into a season of connection, growth, and lasting memories.
